We are the Atomic Cougar Press Association.
A group of young journalists proving that age doesn’t limit ambition. In less than a year, we’ve grown from a small group of students with a dream into a voice recognized by leaders across our state. We’ve interviewed officials, launched a podcast, and built a platform that gives students the power to question, report, and create change. We are not waiting to grow up to make a difference. We’re doing it now!
A.C.P.A. Statement on the Student Journalism Policy Proposal
The Atomic Cougar Press Association (A.C.P.A.) is preparing to bring forward a proposal to the Athens City School Board regarding the recognition of student journalism as an educational activity. Our goal is to work collaboratively with the district to ensure that students engaged in journalism, including interviews, civic reporting, and media production, are acknowledged for their educational contributions.
As part of this effort, the A.C.P.A. is formally enacting the Preservation Act, as outlined in our Constitution. This act authorizes the organization to take necessary measures to preserve and protect the rights, integrity, and independence of student journalism within our district.
We believe that student journalism plays an essential role in developing communication, leadership, and research skills while fostering civic engagement within our community. The A.C.P.A. looks forward to a constructive discussion with school officials and the Board as we continue our mission to support responsible, independent student reporting and to ensure that every student journalist’s voice is both heard and respected.
"You can go after whatever you want; You just cannot deny anyone else to go after whatever they want. So the point is ... you don't have have to wait in line; You don't have to do it the way everybody else has done it. You can do it your way."
-Simon Sinek
"We may not be able to produce a new article everyday but we have the thought and hard work put into the articles we do write."
-Syles Rosser: Head journalist & CEO
"They had been talking about it for a couple of days at that point and in my head and In my head I thought this was only going to last like 2 weeks then there going to give up on it... But we have still been doing it for like 8 months."
-Marek Ausseresses: Chief Marketing Officer
In less than one year, The Atomic Cougar Press Association (A.C.P.A.) has grown from a small student-led group within our school into a recognized voice for independent journalism and free expression. What began as a simple idea, A few students determined to tell the truth and share stories that matter has evolved into a movement making real change.
Since our founding, the A.C.P.A. has gone from publishing within our school walls to conducting exclusive interviews with local and state leaders including the Ohio Governor. We’ve launched our official podcast, Major Events and Interviews, to bring important conversations directly to the public and give a platform to voices that deserve to be heard.
Our mission has always been clear: to inform, inspire, and empower through truthful reporting and fearless journalism. Now, as we continue to grow, we’re working to expand our community beyond the school, inviting new members, supporters, and listeners to join us in shaping the future of the A.C.P.A.
What started as a vision has become a voice and this is only the beginning.
